What causes breast cancer?
- Increasing age
- Personal history of breast cancer
- Early menstruation
- Late menopause
- A first pregnancy after age 30 or no prior pregnancies
- Use of oral contraceptives
- Family history of breast cancer
- Presence of certain inherited genetic changes
- History of radiation therapy to the chest
- Long-term use of combined hormone therapy
- Alcohol use
- Obesity after menopause.

• Control your weight - being overweight or obese increases the risk of breast cancer. This is especially true if obesity occurs later in life, particularly after menopause.
• Be physically active - physical activity can help you maintain a healthy weight, which, in turn, helps prevent breast cancer.
• Breast Feeding - it might play a role in breast cancer prevention. The longer you breast feed, the greater the protective effect.
• Limit dose and duration of hormone therapy.
• Avoid exposure to radiation and environmental pollution.
• Eat healthy with a diet high in vegetables and fruit and low in sugared drinks, refined carbohydrates and fatty foods.
• Eat lean protein such as fish or chicken breast and eat red meat in moderation, if at all.
• Eat whole grains.
• Choose vegetable oils over animal fats.
• Avoid Birth Control Pills, particularly after age 35.
• Go for Breast cancer screening regularly:
If you are between ages 20 and 39 - Get a clinical breast exam about every 3 years.
If you are age 40 or older - Get a mammogram and clinical breast exam every year.
• Consume less alcohol (for those who take alcohol)
• Don't smoke (for those who smoke)
